Legal warning over ground source schemes

The Environment Agency has issued a new good practice guide for ground source heating and cooling systems. Aimed at designers, developers, installers,drillers and owners, the guidance sets out what needs to be done to comply with environmental legislation and manage environmental risks. 

HVCA head of sustainability David Frise urged all members to look carefully at the document to avoid any potential legal action from installations that breach tough environmental legislation.

“Following the guide will help you to meet your legal requirements and reduce the risk that your scheme causes environmental harm,” an Environment Agency statement said. “It is in your interest to avoid environmental harm as it can lead to legal action, including by third parties claiming damages. It could also damage your reputation and that of the industry. 

“We expect operators of ground source schemes to install, manage and decommission all such schemes carefully and to adhere to the conditions we set.”
